CARTA del Director / Director's LETTER

Carta de Intenciones del Director
Director’s Mission Statement by David Blanco

Why does a Spanish Filmmaker want to shot a film in India?
David Blanco, filmmaker

Why would a filmmaker from Spain want to shoot a film in India, you may well ask yourself? Well, I never dreamed I would, but that’s what happened. I am always attentive to capturing unique and inspiring universal stories, no matter where the place is or from where they come. I feel sensitive to what happens around me, always motivated by understanding the human being and his or her circumstances.

        El Leimotiv de “Indian Way”
         The Motto of  “Indian Way”
Virendra Saxena & Vikas Shrivastav

Indian Way is the story of Two men who wish to change a fate that seems written in advance. I believe that this is a matter of general interest to audiences from different ages and countries, a story which will allow everybody to feel identified.

         Tsunami 2004  y  Viaje Periodístico
            Tsunami 2004 & Journalistic Journey

India is a truly incredible place, where the old mixes with the new, tradition with modernity; a culture filled with philosophy, science and religion. I went to India, for the first time, in 2004. During my trip a Tsunami hit Southeast Asia, leaving thousands of victims in its wake. Although the coasts of Thailand were the most affected areas, India also suffered lots of material damage and human loss, mostly on the oriental coast. It was at that point that I decided to undertake a tour across the affected areas writing articles as a journalist. These were published over the following weeks in the international section of the Spanish journal El Faro de Vigo”. I visited remote places and refugee camps where Indian or European reporters had not reached. I interviewed fishermen, and other people affected by the catastrophe in the towns of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. My experience of having written these articles on the stories that I was told let me to write the script for “Indian Way”.

Indian Way:   Una Historia de Supervivencia
      A Story of Suvirval

"Indian Way" is a “foot-movie”, a story of survival in a country where old rules that have been passed from generation to generation. In this crisis that we live today a world wide social, economic and moral revolution is upcoming. In this sense “Indian Way” is a metaphor for the search for change in an environment that resists any kind of alteration. Our main characters fight to believe that this change from old to new is possible (a change in the manner of their own lives).

Indian Way:   Una Historia de Amistad
       A Story of Friendship

The film raises universal issues: The limits of friendship and the idea of survival as an extreme form of coexistence. The main characters of “Indian Way” have to share the road (which is the road of life) despite their speaking different languages, professing different religions, and having come from different social backgrounds. Their only option for survival is to help one another. Their situation echoes the complexity of the world we live in with a wide range of complex cultural relationships and where coexistence continues to be the main challenge, the outstanding matter.

        La Atmósfera de Indian Way
        The  Indian Way’s  Atmosphere

In India, everyday, the harshness of reality mixes with a certain mysticism and spirituality that pervades everything. This atmosphere of Spirituality & Harsh reality prevails throughout the film.

"Indian Way" is a movie with a very intimate story, narrated in wide-open exterior locations. Regarding the cinematography I want to transmit to the viewers the contradictory feeling of "Claustrophobia" and "Agoraphobia". To achieve that, two types of lenses will be used alternatively: telephoto lens for shooting extreme close ups, and wide-angle lens for extreme long shots. The colours of India are Cyan, Red and Green, primary colours which will be enhanced and strengthened in the film. The story will take place in three different landscapes, according to the dramatic spirit of the script. The film begins in the green landscape of “Pondicherry”, and then moves on to the wet and rocky “Gingee” and surrounding area, and finishes in the dry southern regions of “Andhra Pradesh” and “Karnataka”: A transition from lush green field to dry dusty desert.

Equipo técnico reducido   /  Localizaciones Increíbles  y  Únicas
Small International production team  /  Incredible  &  Unique Locations

My desire is to shoot the film with a small international production team. In these conditions it is easier to capture the real life, places and people in India, using only natural locations, some of them declared a UNESCO "World Heritage Site".

Referencias Cinematográficas
Film References

One of the references and inspirations for "Indian Way" is the movie "In This World", directed by Michael Winterbottom. This extraordinary film reflects the independent spirit and freshness that I want to transmit for my movie. "Indian Way" also takes as reference, from the point of view of form, poetic aesthetics very similar to the spirit of the films of the Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, for example in the movie "Pather Panchali" (Song of the Little Road). I love the point of view of "Ray", his sensitivity, how he approaches the characters, their humanity and lack of prejudice, his creative freedom for shooting, despite the financial constraints he had, especially in his early films.
